When the Light Shines Blue
Excerpt:“Dragons. They are creatures like no other; no specific classifications to separate them from one thing or another. They can be cold blooded or warm blooded depending on whether they tend to blow fire or ice- yet still others of their own kind blow nothing at all. They have been seen in all shapes and sizes- with almost any coat variation possible. They most always have some sort of scaled outline, but are then shadowed in rings, stripes, and patches of anything from fur, to feathers, to bone. Depending on the size they can either lay eggs or birth live young. They may speak, but never choose to, deciding to, instead, give fear to their enemies by projecting their voices in the minds of others. It is even said that they can live forever, although it merely an assumption. You can never truly tell if a creature lives for forever, you can only ever guess. It is also next to impossible to kill a dragon. Large plates cover their underbelly and their feet bare large claws with sharp points. The only vulnerable place on them is their eyes and under arms. Many have tried to kill them and also failed in the process for their weaknesses are so few. Therefore, the pelt of a slain dragon is always sold for extremely high prices, and is made almost always into armor and weaponry.” Mother paused and looked across from her book onto me.
“Are you sure that you want me to finish Adelena? It is getting quite dark and I would just hate for you to go to sleep thinking about dragons…” I studied her worried expression then shook my head. I enjoyed listening to the soothing tones of her voice. “I cannot read, so you must tell me what I know not.” I replied simply, scooting closer to her across the small cot. She frowned and raped her free arm around me. “But darling, I have offered to teach you.” I shook my head again, but this time much more vigorously. “Father told me that it is not our place to read. He also said that you were lucky that Duke Richard was so fond of your father, or you wouldn’t know how to yourself.” Mother sighed and stared back down at the odd old symbols spread neatly across the page. “Curse your father. Be that as it may, I should still teach you how to read.” But, despite her gentle protests, she pressed the subject no longer. As she began to read again I fell blissfully into a dreamless clouded sleep. ... |
