Jane was a 13-year old slave when civil war started. She ran away from her plantation with her only friend, Bill, who was her same age and worked at her same plantation at the time. They escaped into the north just a one month before the civil war started in 1861. They hid out in the woods hoping that their old master wouldn't find them. Eventually the war ended, letting Bill and Jane emerge from their hiding place in the woods, very thin and sick. They had no food and no family, and at this time they were just 17. And, after realizing that the north would never feel properly like home, they moved together to Texas in a small town named Temple in 1840. At that time they had no idea how much segregation was happening in Texas, because their deep love for each other (and the fact that Jane herself was pregnant with a young Naomi) blinded them from the true bitterness of the losing south until they were well settled and it was far too late to move back. A choice to go to Texas, was a hard choice to go to a place full of segregation, and as Naomi Fray grew up in the small town of Temple Texas, she got a full blast of the mean, that came from the source of the white population. Yet, Naomi grew up all the same, and never seemed to notice the looks of hatred that were laid upon her shoulders by the rude passer-bys. She grew up to be the same sweet little girl and was very easy-going. She loved everyone, no matter the color of their skin, and she held her head high, for no other reason than that slouching hurt her back. ... |
